Tutorial - The Very Hungry Caterpillar Book - Printable

Eric Carle's beloved The Very Hungry Caterpillar is celebrating its 50th year of publication!

In honor of such a milestone, here's a partial book printable for your dolls!

This PDF is configured to print on American standard (8 1/2 by 11 inch) letter sized white card stock. To assemble, first trim only outer edges of image using blue guidelines. Do NOT separate each row.

Using a straight edge, fold the entire image in half vertically (top to bottom), as shown.

Next, by hand (you don't need to use the straight edge) fold one side into the center fold you just created to create a crease. Repeat for the remaining side.

Now that you have your creases, fold all three creases back over themselves and lay the paper flat again. Cut the page into three sections, or rows, using the blue guidelines. Trim excess from row one and row three as shown leaving a "tail" about half the length of a book page on row three. It does not need to be exactly half but should be less than the whole length or it will not tuck in for gluing.

Fold your pages so that the book cover is on top and each row backs up to the next for gluing. It will look like this from overhead. (Basically, rows 2 and 3 will have the "back" side on "top" to create the gluing surface to the previous section).

Adhere (glue or tape) the pages together - except for the front cover. Tuck the last section, the tale that you left when trimming row three, around the pages so it is under the front cover (shown below). Crease your fold then adhere it down. Now you can glue the front cover down and you have nice spine.

Toothless is enjoying our book too!

Note: This Toothless plush is part of the current line available in stores only at Target (part of a boxed assortment set of loose How to Train Your Dragon plushies).

The Very Hungry Caterpillar was a favorite of my son. He enjoyed creating crafts based on the book for many years. Drop dyed coffee filters covered our kitchen counters every time we needed to make more caterpillars! Did it inspire everyone at your house too?
