Here is another look at JLY 9 doll and Samantha.
I brushed August's hair back and off to the side. This was how her hair looked in some of the old catalogs. Now it is dryer and not as silky. Here she is next to Samantha. You can see the hair difference and most of the JLY dolls did not have curls, or layered hair. Big difference from Samantha.
Faces look
similar because of the time period they were manufactured. Eye
difference makes it easier to tell them apart. However when I found
August with her eyes closed in a box at my parents house I thought she
was Samantha. She was in her dress so I wasn't sure what doll I was
bringing back home until I saw her face and eyes.
Another thing I
noticed in old catalogs is the eye color change in wording. In one it
says GT DOLL 9 gray eyes in another hazel.
There is more
variety now and very few dolls have bangs unlike the dolls of the 1980s
and 1990s PC years. Let me know what you think of the similarities and
differences in dolls yesterday and today.

They are both beautiful dolls. If you hadn't told me, I would have thought they were both Samantha.I agree that they don't make as many dolls with bangs now. American Girl only has six Truly Me dolls with bangs on their site. I would love to see more of your collection. Madelon
ReplyDeleteI've noticed that there are hardly anymore Truly Me dolls that have straight across bangs, while a few years ago, they were all like that. And I mean nearly all of them! Maybe that's why they added the 'Doll Dos' for the dolls (clip on bangs and curls)...

I am trying to get an updated photo together of all of the different types of dolls I have. Right now I am getting them ready to showcase for the holidays...Melody being the latest one down to my mother's doll being her favorite that we now share. Unfortunately I seem to be having a hard time getting it back for my turn. But I have noticed the bang extensions and the trend in doll wigs. Dolls reflect the changes in time and young girls today seem to prefer no bangs. Very different from the Full House DJ, Stephanie and Michelle look aka my childhood.
ReplyDeleteThe Pleasant Company era will probably always be my favorite. Despite the hunchback shoulders, the faces on the early dolls often strike me as having more details... little nuances that show up more because the molds were new. I also find that I like the wider, more open faces. Particularly the oval eye shapes that are more even. Eyelash colors that varied with the doll's hair color! Fully formed ears!
ReplyDeleteToday? I can't see myself as ever purchasing the optional bangs attachment for my bangless dolls, however. I DO find that dolls without bangs can offer greater styling versatility than dolls with bangs.
