Make Feed Sacks - Week 3

General Stores sold large supplies of flour, salt, sugar and lard for customers, typically sold in 5 lb bags. The cloth or burlap bags would have various designs on them. You can use these feed sacks with your historical doll's collection, but for this project it would best suit Kirsten, Addy, Felicity, Samantha or Kit.

*This project requires using an iron and sewing.*

Supplies:

• Cotton, burlap or muslin fabric
• Transfer paper
• Color ink printer
• Iron
• Raffia

Directions:

1. Cut 12" x 8" rectangles from fabric
2. Print the images reversed BACKWARDS
3. Follow the instructions on the transfer paper and apply them to your fabric pieces
4. After you have ironed the images onto fabric, turn the images side down and sew the bags together, leaving an opening on top.
5. Turn the bag right side out and begin stuffing (you can use rice, craft peanuts, polyfil, paper scraps, etc)
6. Using a piece a raffia, tie the bags closed on top.

How to Make a Pioneer Broom - Week 2

Linda shows us just how easy it is to make an old fashioned broom using a few items.

 

Supplies:

• Pine straw
• Yarn or string
• Scissors to cut yarn and pine straw
• Dowel or tube from hanger

 

Directions:

1. Cut straw pieces to scale for the size of your broom.
2. Gather the straw to cover the bottom part of the dowel and begin wrapping yarn or twine to secure the straw in place.
3. Triple knot then cut the yarn, twine or string.

This would work for Addy and Felicity too. Make several to sell in your mercantile.

DIY General Store - Mr. Merriman's Mercantile - Week 1

Linda has made a detailed mercantile.

She has stocked shelves, cubbies and tables full of basic wares you would find in an historical mercantile general store.

Jams, jellies, pickled and jar preserves. Fabric, shoes, bake ware are among the many items you can buy.

  

A collection of gorgeous baskets hangs across the ceiling of the store.

A sitting area for enjoying fresh tea and snacks is available for weary shoppers.

Stock a Colonial Mercantile - Week 1

What sort of items did Mr. Merriman sell in his mercantile?

Linda has some great ideas of what to look for around the house to stock YOUR mercantile this week.

Sewing supplies.

Buckets and bottles.

Baking supplies and nails.

Look for these doll size items around your house or while out thrifty shopping. They make great photo props for historical stores like the mercantile.
