Here is the 1989 version of the book. Pictures are the same as 2014. Little differences such as citations in Looking Back.

  1. Whenever my daughter gets an American Girl book to read we look for the older books. They were so much better. Luckily our local library still has the older versions as well as the new Beforever books.

    1. I do too. I wish I could find my original Samantha collection of stories which is boxed up. It would take forever to find it again and wish I took better care of it now knowing it is rare. I too now look for older books now because of the illustrations and attention to detail. My library is good too on housing older AG books. It is a treat to see.

  2. I have worked on collecting the old AG books for my granddaughters. I have not regretted it.

    1. I noticed that too. I would love to see more of the different variations. I do not have the 1986 one. Again it would be nice to see why or how they differ. The same is true for Addy, but it was revealed in a recent article that Pleasant Rowland had a falling out with the original illustrator for the first Addy books. Rowland later replaced her. I wonder if that was the case too.

    2. I didn't know that Addy's changed or the falling out. I know in the mid-nineties is when they redid Samantha's illustrations. I think only the first 3 Molly books were done before they changed illustrators. I don't know if it was a falling out or they weren't satisfied.

  4. Your dolls are very nice! I love Molly. Wish they had pictures in the newer books. They add so much. Madelon

    1. Thank you. I wish AG could see the value rich illustrations bring to character books. The Beforever line would be enhanced if they could just see what people want.

  5. I have two Molly books, Meet Molly, copyright 1985,1989, and book 4, Happy Birthday Molly!, copyright 1987,1989. I believe I bought them from Friends of the Library for fifty cents or a dollar. Unfortunately, our library was flooded by Hurricane Harvey. I love the old versions best.
