*TAMMY'S TRAVELS* Day 1 - Amsterdam

Anne Frank House
Sadly, no photography was allowed at the Anne Frank House so Tammy is sharing what she has learned from the book she bought.

Anne Frank was born on Frankfurt am Maln, Germany, on June  22, 1929. In addition to her father Otto and her mother Edith, she also had a sister, Margot.  When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, Jews were increasingly discriminated against.

The Franks, who are Jewish, move to Amsterdam in the hope that they will be safe there, but in May 1940 German troops occupy the Netherlands.  It soon becomes clear that the Jews are no safer here than they were in Germany. To avoid being reported, the Franks decide to go into hiding.  It is while the family is living this secret underground life that Anne writes her diary.  Writing offers Anne some release from her situation and gives her courage.

  1. Thank you for sharing. Hope you had an enjoyable trip.

  2. I can see that you are enjoying your time with Tammy! Madelon

  3. Thank you Fawn! The Diary of Anne Frank really made a lasting impression on me when I read it in school. I was about her age when I read it. Another great book is Corrie Ten Boom's, "The Hiding Place". Such great books that tell us of such dark times in history!

    1. Yes, I've read "The Hiding Place". It is a very powerful book. In her later years Corrie was able to forgive the Nazis for the terrible things they did to her, her family and so many others. Corrie Ten Boom lived in Haarlem. We did not visit there.

  4. Love seeing Tammy travel because of all the information that she learns and shares with us. Ms Frank's story is so powerful and I love learning about history and the strength of people who have undergone adversity. Such an important story. Thank you for sharing. Cannot wait to see more of Tammy Travels!

  5. Amsterdam! Wow! Hope you had a great trip, Tammy!

  6. Love all these photos! We visited both Anne Frank's home in Amsterdam and Corrie ten Boom's home in Harlem in 2007. I loved seeing both places because it's important not to forget these awfully horrific dark times in history. We loved the country of Holland.
