Josefina Montoya - Classic vs Beforever Comparison

I originally bought an AG Mattel Josefina from an eBay seller. As stated in a previous post, her hair began coming out in clumps and was impossible to control.

My first Beforever doll is Rebecca, who is a beauty! I decided I wanted a Beforever Josefina and didn't want a head replacement. So I sent Josefina to Selena for a makeover.

You can see I never removed Josie's hair out of the braid. When I did, I discovered the wig/hair problem.

There are slight differences: the meet outfit and accessories are different, but the face paint and skin tone is a little warmer on BF Josie.

I recommend adding BF Josefina to your collection and I can't wait to see what is added to freshen up her collection this year.

  1. Thanks for posting this! I do not currently own any AG dolls, but Josefina has always been on my list as the first Historical doll to collect. She is a really beauty and I had been very curious about any changes with the BF line. Great post :)

  2. I have always liked Josefina but my daughter got Marisol so I don't feel a need to add Josie to our crew. It's a good face mold.

  3. Oh my...where to start. I love Josefina as a doll and her story plot. The story really brought her to my attention after one of my students lost her mother. I saw that she was having difficulty reading on grade level and introduced the book. Once I started reading parts of the story with her...reading words she couldn't, I knew I had to research the doll and her stories to see if I wanted to add her to my collection. Her Christmas theme of celebrating the birth if Jesus is really beautiful and seeing cultural differences and similarities in her collection is inspirational. She is a beautiful doll with a beautiful collection. Sorry I did not ask for her as a kid when she was made by PC, bc her entire collection is beautiful. So glad AG still makes her and parts of her older items from collection.

  4. I agree Ticia.

I am hoping she has some neat items from her stories. Like a Donkey? lol... Or that her desk and old items are reintroduced ...

  5. Okay, I always enjoy your blog but this is by far my favorite one ever!!! I adore Josefina. She was my first doll as an adult and a gift from my hubby. Being Mexican American, I feel I can relate to her story on so many levels. I even had a pet goat on my grandfather's rancho. The only difference is he was black with white as opposed to Sombrita being white with black. I love how Josefina is sweet and wants to be a healer. In my culture the modern curanderasget a bad or even evil reputation. But Josefina loved God and none of the books I've read indicated she was doing things that were evil, just what was available at the time. Now on to your comparison. Squeeeee!! I got the classic non-PC Josefina so that's all I can go on. I thought she was beautiful. Her hair was super kinked when I took it out of the braid and was chopped crooked by the machines. I do have to say that the PC Josefina looks angry, or her facial features seem very sharp to me. The Mattel version looks softer and the BeForever version has the sweetest face. It was the eyebrows that bothered me on the PC version I guess. What I really like about BFJ is her hair. OMG!! It's fantastic. Soft! Loosely braided from the factory! Easy to curl! The list goes on. I also super love her new meet outfit. I like that AG kept her accessories the same. And I'm saving up my money for her new items come spring. Poor Josie didn't get very much and no mini, although most of the BF characters sets are lacking right now. I cannot wait. I'm such a fan of her face mold that I have MAG #28, want Marisol and tend to lean towards most Josefina face molds on dolls I like. Thanks for posting this blog, Rhonda! :)

    1. I'm not really sure... She just never really had any appeal to me. She is ok... And before you ask, no it's not because she's spanish.

  8. Thank you for comparison. I think I would prefer Mattel Josefina.I love Josefina. She is a very beautiful doll. Her long dark brown hair is very pretty, and her face mold is my favorite.I do wish the doll wouldn't come with braided hair, so that the hair won't be kinky. I just ordered all her books from AG. Her story is very well written, and her character is very likable. Josefina is such a sweetheart!

    1. BeForever Josefina's braid is much looser. When you brush it enough (with water) it'll be very straight!

    2. Thank you. Good to know.

  9. Does the beforever Josefina have a different face mold? Because if sh does, her new face mold looks like my mexican friend's face much more than the first one. Or it could just be some camera tricks.

    1. It is considered rude (or at least I was taught) to say someone is "Mexican" I was taught that you should say Hispanic or Spanish. And no, to my knowledge BF Josafina has the same face mold as the original Josafina.

  10. It is not rude to say Mexican or Mexican-American. I should know because my ancestors were from Mexico, and in our family we say "Mexican" all the time. "Hispanic" more commonly refers to anyone descended from people whose ancestors came from any Spanish-speaking country.

    1. I'm sorry. I was just taught that.

  11. Rhonda, is BF Josefina's face thinner than Mattel Josefina's?

    1. No the face width is the same. The size is the same just slight differences that only a picture can convey.
