Silver Eye is a defect in the eye of American Girl dolls where
the inner eye decal begins to detach from the eye. The eye begins to
take on a silver look from the detachment. This generally happens with
specific eye types, primarily the "pinwheel" decal eyes.
The primary cause of silver eyes is heat exposure, such as with a
blow dryer or too much sun exposure; the secondary cause is liquid
exposure to eyes. This mostly manifests in older dolls, due to their age
and thus greater chances of and longer time for exposure. This
generally starts to appear in one eye before the other and it is quite
possible for only one eye to be affected.
American Girl considers silver eye a manufacturing defect and will fix it at no cost through the American Girl Hospital; however, new eyes with hard lashes will be used. If a person has a PM Doll, they may try an eye swap with a matching PM Doll to maintain the softer lashes.
After sending in Kirsten, when she returned I saw that her hair had been re-braided and cut on one side!!! This is why when I sent in Addy I specified she was Pleasant Company and not to touch her hair!

ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda,
Last year I got and 1995 Pleasant Compnay AGOT #20 (retired) for free, w/ lots of clothes and stuff, but she too, had silver eye. I sent her to the AG Hospital along w/ the request that if they had any more old style soft grey eyes in stock to please use those, and they did! Melody (as I've named her) came back w/ 2 beautiful grey old school eyes. And if these start to turn silver, I can always send her back!
That's wonderful! Grey eyes are becoming obsolete now that Ruthie is archiving.
DeleteThis makes me so glad I have my little Molly.
ReplyDeleteTo livingadollslife.blogspot.ca: Does the Silver Eye condition happen to dolls with greey eyes the most??
ReplyDeleteNot sure. I think it's mostly the decal eyes like Samantha and I know Kirsten and Addy have a strong tendency for silver eye, not heard of Felicity having as much trouble. Just try to avoid water and heat in your dolls eyes.
DeleteDecal eyes very rarely go silver, it mostly just the pinwheel eyes. I personally think that there are more Kirstens and Molly's out there with silver, but it's probably pretty even.
DeleteWhat about MAG 55, Rhonda?
ReplyDeleteCould elaborate your question? I'm not sure what you mean.
DeleteCan the My American Girl doll #55 get silver eye? Here she is on American Girl.com:

Any doll can damage to the eye by either water or heat. An eye can rust or become loose inside the socket. Just always protect your doll, any AG doll from direct sunlight/heat and water and you will be fine.
DeleteMy friend and I love AG dolls! Thanks for your help in the learning process!
ReplyDeleteYou're so welcome!!!
DeleteI have a doll with one silver eye. I would like to have it replaced....how do I do that?
ReplyDeleteYou can send her into the AG hospital. Typically they don't charge for silver eye.
DeleteSilver Eye actually looks like the doll is going blind...I can imagine a scenario in which Kaya fans would buy a second Kaya and deliberately silver her eyes to become Speaking Rain, Kaya's adopted sister.
ReplyDeleteI heard that if you sent it in now they just replace the head --- anyone know for sure
ReplyDeleteI just got an Addy American girl doll, should I be worried?
ReplyDeleteIs there any problem with leaving the silver eye? In other words, is it purely a cosmetic problem, or can it cause bigger issues?
ReplyDeleteNo. It is strictly a personal choice, the eye stem will eventually rust.
DeleteEw. So if it rusts, then it will change the color more?
