*REVIEW* Z Yang Doll

The 18" Z doll has warm brown eyes that open and close, and a beauty mark on her left cheek. Her dark-brown hair can be brushed and styled. She has a huggable cloth body, and her movable head and limbs are made of smooth vinyl. She comes with The Real Z paperback book, plus a fun camera-ready outfit:
  • A crewneck printed tee with a camera graphic
  • A gray twill skirt with a turned-up hem
  • Soft and stretchy indigo leggings
  • Casual shoes with a bit of sparkle

Disappointing wig, worst hair on any doll I own. This doll did not originally have pony tails (TM30). Maybe this is why her hair looks like that.

Disappointing perma panties.

No tag on shoe.

Z does not have Tenney hands.

  1. Thank you Madelon. That was a good review. I especially liked the hand comparison. I now see what everyone is talking about, the little lump in the bottom of the perma panties. Are you going to keep her or send her back for a better panty fit? Shame on AG for not doing a good job on her wig!

    1. I believe that the lump in the panty fit is caused by a change in how they sew the body. In the old body there are two darts in their bottoms and that distributes the stuffing better. AG probably did not add the darts because if would make a strange looking panty the result being a bad fitting body with a lump. Sharon

    2. We got our Z today, Jessica picked ours out. She has a pretty good wig. We took 2 out the Box.

    3. I hope they do something to fix this problem. I tried to move the stuffing, but it just made it worse. Madelon

  2. She looks to have some defects. I had better result at my Store. I will for sure open mine in the Store. The display, had a percent bottom. Her bottom look like a boy in girl panties. That would bother me for my Daughter at 7. She would be returned.

    1. I fear this will be the norm. Madelon

  3. Wig: I think Madelon is right. Z is probably a Truly Me doll therefore her hair was not made for pony tails (wig coverage in the back). I have some Truly Me dolls that I put hair into pony tails and it looks the same. On the fence with permapanties. Z has an adorable face.

    1. I agree. We went through 2 and selected one, she has a decent wig. You have to take your time. Every one in store looks like her hair was put into Pigs later, like it was not intended originally. Each had hair sticking out.

  4. Thanks for the review, Madelon.

With the leaked photos of this, and the reaction that was given, why would a company actually put this on the shelf for sale. Someone posted a screenshot from the youtube review and AG's comment was that people notify them if you get a doll like that. If I were the CEO of Mattel and AG I would be ashamed if that product made it to the shelf. For me it would be a reflection of my work performance, especially when the leaked photo and customer outraged, indicated a problem with the product.

I have seen posts on AGFB about the body fabric being changed. There are some that say the fabric is similar to the Wal-mart dolls, and that the velcro will snag it. Can you provide information on the fabric, in regards to the quality? I wanted to buy Felicity, but not sure which route to go, new or second hand. I'm also in the fence about them changing her eyebrows, but the eyebrows, don't affect the quality of the doll, so I can overlook.

The panties, if measured from top of panty to leg opening. It appears that left (my left, doll right) is shorter or not as long , as the right (my right, doll left). Similar situation seems to be in the back as well. With the back seam being the last seam, and the potential that the fabrics are not the same size or shape, that may be why we see the puckers.

What is your opinion of the new seam all the way around the doll being a weak point and making that prone to rips of tears in the fabric. Putting on/taking off tight fitting clothes or shoes.

I did find a video review, by a collector, on Tenney Grant. She reviews 3 dolls, and points out the quality of the wig. On my daughter's Tenney, the wig cap shows through at the neckline, when you pull the hair into a ponytail, like what is in the video. My daughter doesn't want me to return it, because she is fearful that she will get a permapants. The third doll in this video her right (doll right, my left) eye openings looks slightly lower than the other.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2_MMrPv48w

  5. Glad you were able to get Z Yang. She is a pretty doll but I understand your concern about the wig. When I bought my last AG doll this past Christmas, her wig was aweful. I was really surprised that she passed inspection because I bought her off of the sales floor. However these dolls have a pretty face and it is hard to return a doll once you or your girl have bonded with a doll. Most people buy the doll and then the collection, I heard the opposite is true for Z. I wonder what this will mean for future dolls with collections?

  6. She's a cutie...but, I loath the perma-panties.:(

  7. Thank you for the review, Madelon. I just, no. Nope. I wouldn't pay $1 for that doll. It's so hard to look at the dolls we have, and look at your pictures of Z, and accept that the dolls come from the same company. It doesn't seem possible.

  8. Have to agree w/Joyce; will likely never buy a perma-pantied doll, but IF I did I'd replace the body covering with the pattern now available. A lot of work, but at least a work-around for this awful change from AG.

    1. Good luck removing zip ties as they are covered. I was going to buy z as #30 has layered hair but after seeing z wig no.

    2. While removing the perma-pantied cloth body, I'd also remove the zip tie and replace it with a string.

  9. All the American Girls look alike. Only minor changes in facial features. Poor quality body etc. Even the clothes are not worth the money. I preferred AG when Pleasant Company was in charge. I'd rather purchase a Our Generation Doll than purchase any more AG dolls

  10. Well, I'm astounded. I live in Canada so imagine the exchange rate on our low Cdn dollar if I would buy her. I might pay $25.00 Cdn for her. I love her face, but won't say one word about her poor body. Or her awful wig. I love the AG dolls I have so will stick with them. I also really like the Newberry 18" dolls I can buy here in Canada. On a recent sale I bought one for $11 Cdn!

    2. Maplelea are nice quality Canadian dolls. I have two. I just found out about American Girl and I'm disappointed I didn't know years ago so I could buy a really nice one. I'm scared now to buy one.

  11. #30 is the Jess Mold, Z has the extra definition like Ivy mold eyes. Is the wig an actual pigtail wig (like Kaya and #21)? If not could you brush it out and do it with more care like for non pigtail wigs you use a kind of cross over part.
Not impressed by the new body. I wonder if Z's clothes fit the non permapanty dolls?

  12. I am wondering if she will get a farmers market? I guess I may be looking for old dolls with bad heads on ebay to switch them out if we get a poo booty

  13. Thank you for the peek at Z. She is such a great character. It's too bad she's not as great as a doll.
