*Article* Moms Boycott American Girl Dolls After Underwear Change

'We WILL NOT purchase any dolls with permanent underwear': Angry parents threaten to boycott American Girl after the company announced new dolls will come with panties sewn on.

Some parents are threatening to boycott American Girl this week after the company announced that its new doll designs would come with permanent underwear sewn on to the dolls' cloth bodies.
The company posted a message about the small change on Facebook on Tuesday, explaining that going forward, many of its dolls will be sold with underwear that can't be removed — as opposed to previous designs, on which the underwear could be taken off and changed.

But what might seem like a minor, unimportant to tweak to some has outraged and upset other parents, who've promised to stop buying American Girl dolls if the change truly does go into effect.

  1. I think the UK paper could have done a little more research here but nice to know it's making news somewhere. Thanks!

  2. Boycotting AG again? And just because of underwear? (It is giving me flashbacks to when everyone I knew was boycotting because of AG teaming up with Girls Inc.) This is just underwear, not teaming up with a pro-choice group. It's not like they're making the dolls wear thongs. I don't like the permanent underwear, but I'm not going to boycott and cry about it.

    1. This isn't just about the underwear. It's about a steady decline in quality. Sorry, but I'm not giving my money to a company that seems to be only concerned with increasing profits at the expense of the consumer.

    2. All companies/businesses are like that: they're out to make money; it's not just American Girl.

    3. And I don't have to buy from them. My choice, not yours.

    4. we have to watch our generalizations. Not all companies our out for pure profit at the expense of quality. Newman's Own is a quality brand and product whose profits go to charity. Toms shoes, Bombas socks, and Warby Parker eyeglasses provide a quality product with a quality price tag, but feature "buy a pair, give a pair" to someone who can't otherwise afford... Even Hearts 4 Hearts makes a donation when someone purchases a doll. Did you notice last November AG did not sponsor "buy a doll, give a doll" like they did the two previous years?

So I will agree that most companies are purely in it for profit, but not all.

  3. It's not even news. It's an opinion piece, one primarily to poke fun at the customers taking issue with the permanent underwear.

  4. I think we,as customers, should boycott American Girl and hit them in the wallet. What disgusts me is their remarks show clearly on their facebook page they are clearly not listening to their customers and it seems they delight in ticking off life long customers who are voicing valid concerns.

  5. The doll with the long hair isn't an American Girl doll, right? Madelon

    1. You are absolutely correct Madelon, that is NOT an AG doll. Leave it to the Daily Mail to screw that up as well. Trash paper, not even fit for lining a bird cage!

  6. Did anyone read the comments section? The article didn't fully explain why everyone was so upset, nor did it fully explain that the underwear is actually part of the doll. So now AG just has more fuel for their keeping things the way they are because now everyone who is against this change just sounds like they are a bunch of crazy doll people. So sad. I'm done buying from American Girl.

  7. I noticed right off the bat that the first doll shown was not an AG doll.

  8. I noticed the non-AG dolls used in the photos and I did read the comments - something I don't usually do because of trollers and other uninformed people. I thought it was nice that someone was picking up the story, but the comments made me sad again. Yes, there are tons of other atrocities to be upset about in the world. I am upset about those. My doll collection is piece of sanity (even thou some don't think it is sane for an adult to have dolls). Don't mess with it. I could deal with the slimming of the torso even though it was an inconvenience.

I wonder if what people would say if they started putting American Flyer train trucks on Lionel trains so they could lose the third rail. :(
