*Review* Newberry Dolls - Canada

As far as I know these dolls are only available through Sears Canada. And, they are rarely available in store. I saw a few of the deluxe dolls last Christmas in stores, but they do not stock the line in store regularly—the Newberry dolls are available pretty exclusively online.

Here are some photos of the 14-inch, soft-bodied baby dolls which are pretty much the same this year--they just look as if they have less hair this year.

I'm thinking of adding one of these babies to our collection this year for my youngest daughter.

Here are the 2014 dolls.

Avery, Emma, Adelaide, Madison, Abigail and Sommer.

Here are some photos from our own collection. Please note that the lighting is terrible and none of the dolls are dressed in their own 'meet' outfits. These dolls are definitely play dolls to my Brooke (almost 8) and Avery (5), and these are the last outfits they were dressed in.

We also have Katie, but she is not shown with the others, as she has not been given as a gift yet. Since they have changed Brooklyn's face mold (I wasn't crazy about the toothy smile, although I do wish they had kept the tight curls) she is currently next on my girls' wishlist, along with Lily. We'd love to get Amber, too. I wasn't crazy about her outfit, but her East Indian look was so beautiful and now it looks like they aren't selling her anymore!

What I love about these dolls is their variety of eye/skin/hair colours. While the face molds aren't very different from one another, the complexion changes slightly from doll to doll. Adelaide was our doll with the deepest skin tone previously, but now I can tell that Katie is more olive still. And, she is the first Newberry I see to have eyeshadow! Her upper lids are painted a silvery shade which really brings out the pink-brown of her eyes. All the eyes on these dolls are stunning!

I hoping for a freckled one in the future!

  1. Robin, thank you for sharing and doing a great review of the dolls.. Do these dolls have a website? I have heard of these dolls but I never knew where to find them. They are beautiful dolls. How is the hair quality?

    1. They're available only via Sears Canada (so NOT in the US at all)

    2. You are most welcome! Yes, Nonna is right--they only seem to be available on the Sears Canada website (http://www.sears.ca/SearchDisplay?categoryId=&storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&sType=SimpleSearch&resultCatEntryType=2&showResultsPage=true&searchSource=Q&pageView=&beginIndex=0&pageSize=24&searchTerm=newberry+doll) I haven't seen them anywhere else!

  2. You know, these dolls look quite like Journey Girls! They're cute. How much do they cost?

    1. They vary based on their outfits and accessories, but the basic doll is $29.99 Canadian--and they often go on sale for about $20! A great price, which is why my girls have so many of them! ;) The "deluxe" versions range from $39.99 to $59.99, which is still very reasonable!

  3. These are beautiful! They look like the same Journey Girl face mold but even cuter!

  4. Thank you Robin, the Head molds are the same as being used by Journey Girls and by Espari (Barnes and Noble), the body is the same as the AG dolls full cloth and filled. It is interesting seeing how companies go to the same China manufacturing company to acquire the doll parts and create another version of the doll. The clothes seem to be the same as what Espari (Barnes and Noble) just released for 2015. thanks again Diana

    1. No problem! Yes, they are definitely the same molds as Journey Girls, although I find the range of skin/hair/eye combos to be more vibrant and varied than the Journey Girls. Also, I've noticed that some of the accessories are the same ones used by Journey (same sandal type, etc.).

  5. Thank you Robin for posting these pictures! My daughter has Zoe, Abigail, Lilly and Amber. If you like Amber, new Katie and Holiday Edittion Isabella look very similar, if not identical. I purchased Isabella last year and returned it because except for the clothes, it looked identical to Amber which we already had. (Amber looks a little different in real life than the promotional pictures). I agree, these dolls are really pretty and very affordable! They cost $30 (Canadian) and on sale you can even buy them at 50% off. They are made by the same company that makes Journey Girls and Espari and the looks and quality are very similar.
Sears Canada releases a new collection before Christmas and when the inventory is gone, they don't seem to restock.

    1. You're welcome! They are beautiful dolls and well worth the price.

We now have Katie (well, the girls don't know it yet!), but I figured she was very similar in appearance to Isabella. Thanks for letting me know!

It's funny--they will be out of stock for months and then will suddenly re-stock an item from the previous collection, but a few days later it's gone. They are definitely a "get them while they are in" item. In fact, I heard that Avery and Abigail sold out late last October and forced quite a few parents to turn to Kijiji in hopes of finding the dolls in time for Christmas. Another shipment came in November, but it didn't last long and then it took months for them to re-stock those dolls. As soon as I saw Avery go on sale, I had to buy her for my own Avery. My middle daughter received her "namesake" for her birthday last year.

So far, I think Abigail and Avery are my favourites--so I can see why they were a hit last year!

  6. What is the hair like? Some of the Sears reviews imply they have big bald spots?

    1. We have 2 Newberry dolls - Lily and Zoe. Lily, purchased in 2014 has a full head of thick black hair. Zoe was purchased 2nd hand so I am not sure when she was manufactured, but has curly hair and if you look you can see some thin spots. We purchased "Sommer" for my daughter at Christmas (2015. She had very sparse hair, you could see the scalp in several spots. I couldn't style her hair in a way that it covered that up. We returned it. I'd love to buy another because they are wonderful otherwise, but I'm hesitant to order another online, only to have to return it.

  7. Hello! How long is Katie's hair??? It was supposed to be down to her hands but it's half way down her chest no wear near her hands. But the pictures everywhere say she has long hair. Thanks

  8. We just received Katie today. I am thinking of returning her even though she is very cute. Her hair is soft and a pretty medium brown color to match her olive complexion and her pink/brown eye color. Unfortunately Katie's hair is very uneven. It is supposed to be layered but just looks messy and choppy. It is not as long as I had hoped and is certainly shorter than what you see in the online photos. It is a longish medium length. Our doll also has some dark brown marks on both her legs . So even though Katie is super cute in her parka, leggings, boots and T- shirt;she has defects so we may be sending her back. Note: we also ordered Lilly and she arrived in perfect condition.
