*NEWS* AG Trademarks New Name - BeForever 1960s?

Could this be the name of the AA 2016 BeForever character? Trademarked June 2, 2015.

  1. Melody Ellison. Hmmmm. Seems quite similar to Mary-Ellen Larkin. Both begin with 'M' and end with the 'N' sound. Maybe it's for the rumoured AA 2016 GoTY? Just a guess though. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

    1. It's unclear if this name is for GOTY16 or BF16. However Gabriela trademarked first, that may be for GOTY16. Time will tell.

    2. You're right about that! AG doll names are starting to get really similar. I think Gabriela will be GOTY 16 and Melody Ellison will be a disabled doll. It's all just guess. But I don't think AG would make a 60's doll right after Mary Ellen. Wait! What about a doll from the titanic!! Maybe that's it! Well, I guess I'll just have to wait and see! :)

    3. I do believe that Melody is in the 1960s. According to Social Security names, Melody was a more popular name between the 1950s and the 1960s, and this name declined in popularity in the 1990s. Also what is interesting to note is that this girl's last name is Ellison. For those of you who don't know about Ralph Ellison, he was an African American writer that made the story Invisible Man which reflected the emotions of African Americans and their struggle to be seen as human beings. This story was published in the 1950s and was very popular in the 1960s. The name Ellison seems to be connected to this writer somehow. I doubt they would make a doll from the titanic, especially not this one. There were no African American children on the Titanic, especially when it sank, and they confirmed the next doll would be AA. They usually make dolls from an entire era or culture, rather than from an event. MG and Cecile were special dolls at the time (hence why they were retired so soon).

    4. Maybe not necessarily AA, but Afro Carribean children were on The Titanic:

  2. I was wondering If it is a rumored African American doll in the 1960's, Well I was looking up events in Detroit of the 1960's and this may be a depressing issue but could it maybe involve the Detroit Race Riot of 1967?

    1. I doubt Ag would want racial issues-Sophia

    2. ...you do realize that Addy is based directly on racial issues, yes? And it's been confirmed that Addy is now being replaced by Melody Ellison, a black girl growing up in 1960s Detroit, according to multiple sources.

  3. Can't wait to see if AG usese the ever so popular Josefina face mold which sells well for the new AA historical doll. I still think that she will be a 1920s doll. I just see Harlem Renaissance and flappers. Not to mention the theme of famous AA writers, musians, artists and poets. Since AG has been a little on the stingy side with the hair thickness and length of newer dolls, a cute bob will do with a beautiful headband. Either way, very exciting news to look forward to in 2016.

    1. Well, Melody was not a used name until the later half of the Great Depression, according to Social Security names. So I doubt that she is from the 1920s. I wish she was too, being an African American myself. I would rather see the parts of my history that was positive. But considering that the 1960s is more related to the things that black people are going through today, I do believe that Mattel is focusing on relating to that demographic.

  4. I love the name Melody, no matter what doll it's used on. However I can also point out that yes, AG names are getting quite similar with 2 grace dolls. Marie grace is technically just Grace, as the "Marie" part is her nickname, and was actually her mothers name. Both dolls also have blue eyes and unique facemolds. Either way I think it will be fine because I'm sure many children that get pre-named dolls rename them.

    1. I agree I noticed that when her name was released and also her collection. But, they are also starting to not be honest with their clothing. By saying that they are using coral instead off all that pink! And they are not being very open to other races mainly (Chinese, Indian, and AA).I guess they are trying to pull in younger girls, 6-8,and not tweens, teens, and adults?

    2. The new doll, which I believe is Melody Ellison, according to American Girl's company on facebook is supposed to be African American. So on a positive side, at least they are attempting to focus on another ethnicity besides Caucasian.

  5. I think this is the GOTY 2016's name. I'm not sure if AG would use two names in a row that start with G for GOTYs, so I think Gabriela is the AA 2016 doll's name, and Melody is the next GOTY .

    1. They would be using 2 names that start with g. Grace and Gabriela

    2. Gabriela was never used as a name until the late 1980s and 1990s. This is because this name is more latina than it is America. Melody was a much more popular name in the 1950s and 1960s, according to social security names.

  6. Melody reached its peak popularity as a name in the 1960s (and was popular in the 50s too) so I wouldn't be surprised to see it as a 1960s doll. But it's also pretty popular today too, so it could easily be a GOTY name!

Do we really know that there's going to be a 1960s doll in 2016??

    2. I know that AG confirmed the 2016 doll will be African American, but they didn't say anything about her time period. Where does the talk of the 1960s come from?

    3. It was "leaked" on social media by an "insider" who said she was a 1960s doll from Detroit.

  7. We don't know that she won't be. We only know that American Girl announced on their Facebook page that a AA historical doll will be released next year. Wouldn't that be amazing if the next GOTY and the historical coming out next year were both African American.

  8. It's a little late to be filing the trademark for the GOTY name since AG usually does that about 12 months ahead of time. Gabriela, however, was filed in February making me think she is the GOTY.

  9. On 12/27/2014, American Girl wrote the following on their Facebook page:
" We have two African-American characters in our historical line and are pleased to share that we have exciting plans for another new African-American BeForever character in 2016. Stay tuned for more details! "

  10. I would not be suprised if melodys story's are set during the Harlem rennisance or in. A small, town outside Detroit and the 1960s storyline is just a detour it makes sense since someone published photos of Maryellen earlier this year american girl can not take any chances and at the time that the storyline was being researched which would be Around 2013 downton abbey was starting season 3 which was set in the 1920s and the new great gatsby was released so the 1920s was popular in ameircan pop culture at the time so,I would still not be suprised if Melondy is from the 1920s and the the 1960s story is a shame but still I'm execited about an African American doll it's about time American Girl

    1. I do believe that she is from the 1960s. The same person that said Maryellen was from the 1950s and that Caroline was being archived has been right about both. Therefore, if they say that there will be a AA girl from 1960s Detroit, I believe it. Note: the "insider" was not from the normal "American Girl" people. This was from an insider that passed on confidential information to someone.

  11. Does anyone know when the BF 2016 will be released? I had heard it was going to be January 1 but I thought the GOTY was always released on that date?

  12. It's the the name of the new BeForever doll coming out in 2016. She's African American, from 1964, and she will be replacing Addy. I saw several leaked photos.
