  1. Finally! But what about that redheaded 1950's doll we saw leaked pictures of? Will she still be released?

    1. She was a prototype, so I'm not sure she will be released. Samantha must have been considered the historical release for 2014. The next historical debuts 2016 per the FB announcement.

    2. AG didnt say she was next. They said the historical for 2016 is an AA.

  2. Has anyone heard anything about the cute redhead? I can't wait for her to be released!!

  3. Yay! I'm so excited that they are releasing a African-American girl! I'm sure she'll be beautiful :) I wonder why they say that they currently have two African-American characters in their line, though, because Cecile is retired and Addy is the only African-American historical girl left. But I'm sad that this probably means Addy will retire so the new doll can take her place :( Addy is one of my favorite dolls and I will be sad to see her go if she retires :(

    1. There is no reason to retire an AA doll to make way for another. There are 3 blondes. They dont get rid of s blonde to bring in a blonde. I am sure one of the blondes will be leaving us.

  4. I doubt Addy will retire at the same time a new AA character comes out I would think they will leave them both for at least a year or two, or it would look really obvious that they only want 1 out there at a time. I wonder if the new 1950's one will end up being African American instead of the red head?

    1. It could be, i fact, that would make a very interesting doll! The 1950s was the time when AAs were descriminated. Like, you know when they had the signs that said "colored" water fountain. I think that would make a great story, so I sure hope so!

  5. *From Julie's doll mom:*

Hmmm...well, as a black woman I'm happy to hear this. But folks, I doubt there will ever be a GOTY who's black. You know there's a push to sell the doll and all her things in a year's time, and sadly, black dolls don't sell as well. They'll do historical or MAG b/c there's not that push, you can buy the stuff at your leisure. But back to this character, 2 things: 1) I don't think she'll be a 50s doll...maybe a 60s doll to tie in w/ Martin Luther King, Jr. and 2) I hope she has either Sonali's face mold (like Cecile did) or a totally new one. I'm really not that wild about the Addy face mold. In my opinion, (as a black woman) she's just too "ethnically stereotypical"; wide nose, buck teeth...she just isn't pretty to me. But I do like the mold for the new mini Addy doll. If any of you adults are familiar w/ the 60s TV series "The Mod Squad", if you put a pair a dark rim glasses on #56, she looks like Linc Hayes! The mold is OK for a boy, (and I've seen some customs on Etsy), but personally, I don't like that mold on a girl. The Cecile mold w/ braids or even an afro would be nice. And please remember before you reply that all of us are entitled to an opinion; this happens to be mine.

    1. I think they would do fabulously well with a biracial girl of the year, I would love to see Sonali face mold medium skin #58 hair with highlights. Then she would look just like my niece which would make me really happy since none of the current dolls have really appealed to her.

    2. I think a 60's tie in would be awesome. ROFL at the Linc comment, I never thought about it. I much prefer the Sonali mold too. I'm still waiting on an Indian or Pakistani doll with a sari, something tells me I'm going to be waiting a long time though and maybe I should just make my own.

    3. I would love to see them do a 60's historical African American with Sonali's face mold! I'd snap her up in a second. And I would love to see an Indian doll too! I love the different faces. I collect mostly historical because they're more "different". The only GOTY I have is Jess because I love her face (Asian).

  6. She might be an 80's doll to tie in with American Girl 30 yr. anniversary in 2016. I hope she has the Sonali(Cecile) mold as well!

  8. I can't think of any great historic moments from the 80's. But it sounds like she would be from the 60's in regards to the Civil Rights movement. And in that case, most probably from the South. My guess Alabama or Tennessee. Guess we will wait and see...

    1. No great historic moments from the 80's??? The 80's fashions alone deserve their own historical line!

    2. I agree. I would love it they could include the 80s iconic sweaters and leg warmers. Or have it tie into the theme of the 1st teacher going into space which did not really work out so well, but just the science theme alone would be great for AG to tackle for a historical doll, one that includes a NASA space type theme and she would be a girl of color...that would be great for AG to do in 2016. I would have loved seeing that growing up.

    3. 80's doll comes complete with a can of Aqua Net so she can achieve the perfect big hair, a book on Val-Speak and a Duran Duran cassette!!!

Seriously though, no historic moments from the 80's? Uh, Ronald Reagan's time in office, the collapse of the steel industry (hey, they could make her from Pittsburgh!), introduction of MTV, Challenger expolosion, fall of the Berlin wall--that's just a couple of things that come to mind right off the top of my head. But I do think the 60's would be far more significant for an African American doll, the things going on then weren't all that different to some of what we are seeing right now. Makes me sad to see history repeating itself, let alone so soon.

    4. Oh my - Duran Duran what a great band (or the Go-Gos)! That would be 1984 for sure!

I doubt they would re-live MY 80s experience...they would have to have Foreigner, Journey, Pat Benatar, Van Halen, REO Speedwagon and if they continued the story into 1986 - HAIR METAL - LOL!!!! My husband was in several bands in the late 80s hehe. (I don't think I can re-live all of this again *rolls eyes*)

    5. Oh gosh Rhonda, sounds like you and I could have gone to school together! LOL

    6. AG started in the 80s. That is history! MTV started, hair bands....the Berlin wall came down...hmmm. i hope its not the 80s.

    7. Kentucky maybe?...I know,It's sort of north, but it was,in Addy's time, a state that could legally have slaves so...

    8. Rhonda and Flo...yay! Fellow hair band girls! I was into all the music, but was essentially a "flannel shirt" in a preppy package. LOL Never could get my hair big until college - then my roommate did it for me. :-D

And before someone from the 90s tries to tell me that grunge was the start of flannel shirt wearing, I have photographic evidence that we wore plaid, flannel shirts over our heavy metal concert shirts.

  9. I understand the 1960s reference about Civil Rights and the doll's connection being linked to MLK Jr., however, a 1980 doll would be perfect due to the anniversary of AG and the movement that African Americans had in the 80s to the middle and upper middle class system which came as a result from the Civil Rights Movement. I have an advanced degree in history so I wont get into too many details about this. :) Maybe I am a little biased bc I was a girl in the 80s and loved everything AG aka PC. Hope she is from the 80s bc her clothes would be awesome. But more importantly, I just want AG to make another doll of color with an original mold or maybe use a Josefina face mold.

  10. I really loved Cecile and I wanted to add an AA doll to our collection.... but I have a 5 years old daughter and "our" dolls are play dolls.. So the super curly hair would be a problem.. she would ruin her hair in no time... I hope the new historic has a wavy hair like Saige's which is easier to manage... and Cecile face mold... would certainly buy her!

  11. As a white person I can say I am SUPER EXCITED!!!! OMG, we're finally getting a new historical and she's not white!!!! I can't wait to get her.

  12. It would be so cool if it was a doll from the late 80s who had an AG doll when they first came out... although more likely is probably Civil Rights movement or even the Harlem Renaissance (how cool would her clothes be??)

  13. Does this mean someone will be retiring? Who is rumored to be the next one to leave? (I'm worried it might be Kit. My daughter is still a bit too young, but want her to have Kit to learn about her great grandparents youth.)

  14. I really hope they do not do an 80's doll. I am not really into the fashion.....
Yet I LOVE the 50's. The prototype should definitely be made. It would be a smart marketing
move because all of the grandparents of the girls who lived during the 50's might buy them the stuff.

  15. I think this is wonderful news and don't care what era she is from. Lots of great historic moments from the 50s, 60s, and 80s.

80s - she'd have to have a walkman with cassette tapes! Maybe she would be a bit of all the "stereotypes" and be a preppy punk with a flannel shirt.

  16. I'd really like her to be from the 1920s Harlem Renaissance, but probably since they have Rebecca in NYC they won't do that. Still, what cool stories she could have!

  17. This is exciting. I wonder if AG would venture out with their doll and make a Universal doll that had all those things happen, Berlin Wall etc she didn't need to be "American" Girl? Just a thought given they want to expand and redefine their brand

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh yeah! I would be on board with that 50's prototype! I was hoping she'd come out in August. Well, here's to hoping she's awesome whoever she is.

  21. I would like to see a 1990s girl, the 90s was an eventful decade in the United States (technology constantly changing and expanding, Clinton's time in office, Rodney King riots, Oklahoma City bombing, OJ Simpson trial) I thin it would all make for a great story that would just be unforgettable

  22. No almost modern please! Harlem Renaissance! The 60s is too negative, the 1920s is would make an awesome story! Really bummed they are taking out Caroline, she is one of my favorites!Looking forward to new 2016 dolls,GOTY is going to be Lea Clark, I think, so far she's too much like Jess. UGGHHH!
