How to Make Colonial Straw Hats - Week 1

Supplies:

  • 8" Straw hat (this one is from Hobby Lobby)
  • 1/2" wide Ribbon, any color
  • Rick Rack, any color
  • Flowers, small
  • Tacky glue
  • Low temp hot glue
Directions:

This hat is THICK straw, but if you find a thinly woven hat, make two slits on either side of the crown where it meets the brim. Then run a piece of ribbon through one slit, up over the hat then back down into the other slit.

If using a thick hat, fold the edge of a ribbon tail under then hot glue it onto the very edge of the outer brim. Repeat on the other side.

Rick rack helps cover the ribbon and makes for a decorative touch on the outer brim. Using tacky glue or hot glue, wrap the rick rack around the brim, securing as you go.

Make six ribbon bows, then glue them to the top of the hat as close to the crown as possible. I added small flowers to three of the bows in front.

  2. I had a Felicity tea party birthday party when I was younger, some birthday around nine, and we made straw hats for us to wear. It was so much fun. I'll have to see if I have pictures.

  4. Oh wow, Felicity was my favorite doll growing up, and my grandmother made me a number of hats just like these! Thanks for posting this. It brought back memories, and it's a great idea for a craft. I had hours of fun playing with my own Felicity's DIY hat collection.

  5. I found the same straw hats at Hobby Lobby! They didn't have the Make Me Your Friend dresses though. :(
I am working on the hats right now!
