Papier Mache dolls began in Germany in the early 1800s. Papier Mache was a very workable material because it
could be easily molded then painted.Later in the 1830-40 papier mache dolls were being created in both France and America.
The smaller dolls were typically 8"-10". Larger scale papier mache dolls stood mid-size 12"-13".
More common were the 20"-24" sized dolls, with cloth bodies stuffed with wood wool (excelsior), and both arms and legs stuffed with Kapok.
The largest papier mache dolls produced were 28"-30". Most papier mache dolls had molded hair that had been painted.
