*RUMOR* AG Planning New Doll

I have received several emails and reader comments about a newly trademarked name. I typically don't write posts until I have more information. However, due to the influx of questions, I decided to acknowledge everyone's curiosity.

In July 2014, I saw on social media a person claiming to have insider knowledge state that there was a character in the planning stages who is "disabled and her grandparents live in Italy".

Recently AG Trademarked Gabriela, considered an Italian name

This is of course in the infant stages, characters can take a minimum of three years to plan. This is certainly the beginning of a new character, whether she is a BF character or GOTY is unclear. We will have to keep watching this character develop.

  1. Rhonda,
I was checking it out, and I saw that under Classification Information-Primary Class it said: games and playthings;gymnastics and sporting articles not included in other classes; decoration for Christmas trees. Maybe that has some story to it....... gymnastics, sporting.... I have no idea what the decorations for Christmas trees would be.. maybe she would be a limited edition doll only for the Christmas season?

  2. Not sure if this will be posted or not, as my previous comment on this subject wasn't.....not sure why?......
If you do some more extensive research, you'll find that Gabriella (with 2 l's) is in fact an Italian form of Gabriela (with 1 l) which is the Spanish female form of Gabriel which is Hebrew.
I still think Gabriela could be the new 1950's Beforever character, and that she could be Puerto Rican. There was a HUGE surge of Puerto Ricans to the United States in the 1950's....it was called "The Great Migration," and was largely brought about due to the widespread popularity and accessibility of air travel.
Also, has anyone noticed that the new Beforever character's books are going to have Spanish editions?
I may be way off base, but doesn't anyone else think this could be a possibility?

    1. That is a good theory. The Spanish edition books, however, are just for the New Mexican AGP stores, I think. Sadly, if a Puerto Rican Doll, that would (possibly) give Josefina a chance to retire. :(

But I think you are on the right track-- and since the book titles have hints of air travel in the titles, I think the Great Migration seems right on point for this doll. :)

    2. Thanks for responding, Mia! :)
I should clarify: only 2 of the books show Spanish editions on Amazon: "Taking Off" and "The One and Only."
Why would AG only publish this new character's books in Spanish?.....Will she be the only doll sold in stores in Mexico?
Interesting to note: the only other character's books that I can find that were published in Spanish were Josefina's.....

    3. Thanks for your reply, Mia! :)
I agree...I hope they don't archive Josefina....I really like her character!!
I should mention: only 2 of the books were listed as having Spanish editions available: "Taking Off" and "The One and Only."
I wonder why AG would only have Spanish editions for this character's books?....Will she be the only doll sold in the stores in Mexico?
Also, the only other doll (that I could find) who had books in Spanish was Josefina.....

  3. If this becomes true, then American Girl may be deciding to retire Josefina by 2016 after all. Or Caroline will retire also to give room for the AA doll next year. I think we should be prepared for both retiring soon. Another theory as to why there are so many Josefina retirements is all Beforever characters are getting new beds this year. Pretty much all beds have been on sale in the past two months. So then Josefina could stay.
This new doll sounds really exciting though! If she is Puerto Rican I might buy her.

    1. Isn't it fun being an AG detective?!
Unfortunately, I have a feeling you may be right about Josefina and Caroline being archived....they were both missing from the last catalog. It's so sad when dolls have to leave.

    2. Caroline has been archived as of January 1,2016

  4. Has anyone noticed the Name Gabriela seems like a name that would fit a black girl? if it is true and this is a GOTY, perhaps AG is planning a black GOTY! that would certainly calm everyone down on the subject of "too many white GOTYs" "not enough blacks" the funny thing is, that you'd think Whites would prefer white dolls.

    1. I'm white and the doll I want is a GOTY with an Indian background who has a beautiful sari in her collection. I don't care about the skin color of the doll as long as she is beautiful. If AG went through even half of the different ethnicities common to Americans, they would have GOTY dolls for the next 10 years easy. And with different cultural backgrounds, the stories could shift from being sport-doll, art-doll, sport-doll, etc. and start being interesting again.

    2. Actualy, Molly, a sari would be inaccurate for a doll of age 9-10.

    3. You know, you could be right about a black doll. Maybe Gabriella is actually the AA Beforever character's name, and Mary Ellen is the 2015 Beforever character. I never thought about that. Good thinking!

    4. I'm (largely) Caucasian, and the only bit of me that isn't originally European is 1/8 Cherokee, but I honestly prefer dolls that are non-white the most.

  5. I Agree Molly, but i have noticed people are calling AG racist for not making a black doll, and certainly. and indian doll would be cool, especially since Sonali was of indian heritage i believe. but i would like if people would just calm and not Freak out about skin color. honestly, AG is running out of sports to make dolls out of. one, they had Kailey (if you would call her sport a sport) then their is Marisol (Dance), Mia (ice skating/hockey), McKenna (Gymnastics) and Isabelle (dance), we have to give AG credit for everything they are doing right, and not all in one point out every single mistake AG is making or doing. now Their are a few dolls with authenticities such as Kaya, Josefina, Addy, and countless myags, I think that AG should make an indian doll that sings (not like Kaya, since Kaya is the Indian) but the doll of an Indian Heritage backround. Instead of pointing mistakes, we should take joy in everything AG is doing, not trying to control AG to do everything we want. It doesn't work that way. We can't Control AG, and we most certainly can't go begging for things that may not be made.

    1. Are you saying Indian as in Native American, or in Indian from the country India?
Sonali was Indian from the country India.

  8. Actually:
Gabriela, spelled with one L, is traditionally a Latina name, while
Gabriella, spelled with two Ls, is Italian.

If they're just now trademarking the name, I doubt it will be the 50s doll. When I looked at her books, it said they will be released 2015. If Josefina is getting a revamp this year on August 27th (that is when her Journey is set to come out,) than I bet that will be when the 50s doll comes out.

In my mind, it is also possible that the 50s doll could come out around Christmas, like the first commenter said. In that case, it might not be too late to trademark the name. I'm kind of wondering if she will be a LE doll for Christmas, but if we're completely missing the mark on the time period. This is from Wikipedia:

Generally, the remaining Jim Crow laws were overruled by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

How cool would it be to have a 1960s LE Latina girl (I'm doubtful they would make a black 60s girl) to celebrate that it has been 50 years since segregation ended?
