Dollhouse Back Story - TBT

Since my grandma's birthday POST, I received several questions about my pink dollhouse. I had a dollhouse from the time I was in kindergarten through 3rd grade. My parents had it built and painted my favorite color.

Sadly, I do not have photos of the interior, but can describe in detail what it looked like. The floor was covered in burnt orange carpet with Holly Hobbie curtains in the two front windows. The walls never got painted and remained unfinished wood inside.

Along the back wall were my Sears goldenrod appliances.

I remember even in Los Angeles, during the summer it was so hot and stuffy inside.

We moved from this location to another house in Diamond Bar, CA and in transit the roof blew off the house and splintered in pieces.  I watched (2nd grade) as the roof flew up into the air and landed in the grassy ditch to the right of the freeway. Luckily no one was injured. My parents were devastated.

This is the replacement roof.

Posing with more of my grandma's dolls.

This is my Mrs. Beasely doll.

  1. Oh such adorable pictures Rhonda! Thanks for sharing them! Such a sad story about the roof! I'm glad your parents were able to replace it. I remember having a super small kitchen set like that which was made of metal when I was a little girl. I remember cutting my finger on the edge of one of the doors. Ouch! Glad they switched to making these sets out of plastic when I had my daughters! I had a Mrs. Beasley too! Loved her! Such great memories! ~ Maria

    1. I know what you mean - the door edges were very sharp on those kitchen sets.

  3. So adorable. I enjoy this. I had a small metal kitchen when I was little. My husband said he remembers Mrs. Beasley. One of his sisters had one. He liked the photos, too!

  4. Love this post. I always wanted a play house, but made forts and houses from sofa cushions and large boxes instead. Then dad built my doll house and...enough said.

Family Affair was a favorite for us to watch too. I loved that show and Mrs. Beasley. One of the ladies at church thinks my AG Melody (with her glasses on) looks like Mrs. Beasley; I don't see the resemblance, but love Mrs. B.

Thank you for sharing these great pictures and experiences with us.

  5. I have to admit - even though I am a doll fanatic, I have never really wanted to have a little daughter of my own! I would love to have either boy or girl, but, I have always hoped for boys LoL
Anyway, I thought I would let you know that looking at all of your old photos just filled my heart up and made me think that it really would be wonderful to have a daughter one day :D
Thank you so much for sharing, I loved this post!! <3

    2. Aww! Thanks so much Rhonda, I'm 27 and about to move from the US to Australia to marry my boyfriend of 3 years. We will be trying to have children soon enough, and he has always said "... but girls are more behaved, and less trouble!" and I always reply, "Well, I wasn't!" ;D
I'm a sucker for photos of little kids, but yours just really got me thinking of how much fun it would be to see my own little girl enjoying dolls, doll houses, building a play house, etc!

  6. You must have been so upset watching the roof fly off your doll house. It's good no one got hurt. These old pictures are so nice. My favorite one is of you in the blue romper in between 2 of your grandmother's dolls. I think they are bigger than you are. LOL

  7. Just happened across your blog and had to comment! I too had a playhouse made for me by my grandfather, had the same steel appliances inside, had the same plastic pan and pot set with faces, and my mom gave my daughter a big life size doll that is exactly like the one to your right! So many similarities it took me right back to my childhood :)
